Work With Us

BookEnds is committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace through our hiring practices, internship program, and the books and authors we represent. As an agency, we have a firm commitment to advocating for all authors and others within the industry, not just clients.

Our clients include award-winning authors and illustrators of both adult and children’s books. Our agents represent all areas of fiction and nonfiction for all ages.

Interns

Interns are an essential part of the BookEnds team. They help keep the office running smoothly, manage social media, and make creative decisions. We view this program as a true learning opportunity that provides real experience in the type of work you can expect from a job in publishing. Many of our interns have gone on to be agents, editors, and other publishing professionals.

Assistants

Our assistants are the backbone of everything we do within the agency, all while laying the groundwork for their own careers in publishing. We view them to be equally as integral to the team as our agents. In addition to assisting in the day-to-day operations of BookEnds, we rely on their input and expertise to better support our clients.

Agents

We are a tight-knit team looking for people who have the passionate belief that we can change the world through books. You will be promised mentorship, coaching, and regular communication. As an agent, your job will be to advocate for your authors and commit to building a partnership with them.

What To Expect

BookEnds’ focus has always been on building the careers of our clients’ dreams , and we bring the same determination to growing the careers of our team members. Our team values mentorship, camaraderie, and constant communication. We aim to foster an environment that promotes growth, collaboration, and creativity.

Work from Home

The BookEnds “office” has been virtual since our beginning in 1999, making us experts in creating a community and family even from afar. We use Slack, Zoom, and Query Manager to keep in regular contact with each other and are always open to new technology and systems to better ourselves and the Agency. Our agents can and do work anywhere in the world from home, coffee shops, beaches, or wherever their hearts desire.

Salary

Literary Agents are 1099 contractors allowing them the freedom to make their own hours, build their own brand, and work on their many successful side hustles. Two of our agents are published authors, and more are working toward that goal. Employees are paid competitive salaries plus benefits like health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and a generous holiday schedule.

Literary Agent

The best people come your way when you least expect them. This has been a long-standing belief at BookEnds. Many of our team members became invaluable because even when we didn’t know we needed to hire, they knew we needed them.

BookEnds agents are a close-knit group, and for that reason, we are looking for someone to convince us they belong here. When working with BookEnds, you are promised mentorship, coaching, and regular communication.

Our agents have a passionate belief that we can change the world through books. Our job is to advocate for our authors and not just sell their books but also work hard to build careers.

We are open to resumes from those just entering the job market to those seeking to move their career to the next level. The best agents have:

  • Good communication skills and the ability to have hard conversations.
  • An understanding that much of this job is sales and marketing.
  • A willingness to explore new technology, tools, genres, and experiences.
  • Respect for teamwork.
  • Strong organizational and writing skills.
  • The ability to multitask.
  • A love for books and the creators behind them.
  • The drive to make things happen.

More than anything, she’s looking for candidates who understand and want to be a part of BookEnds culture.

Internship Program

AS OF MARCH 16TH, 2023 WE ARE CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS

BookEnds is offering a part-time, paid ($16/hour), remote internship position to one person for the 2023 summer season (during the June 1st—August 31st window) regardless of status as a student, graduate, degree-holding status, or age.

We have had great success with this program so far! Many of our literary assistants to date have interned with us in the past, and many of our interns have gone on to have successful careers elsewhere in the publishing industry. We believe in educating our interns about the industry by including them in company meetings, engaging them in conversations, encouraging questions, and working with them as they complete their duties.

Because we see the internship program as a real learning opportunity, applicants do not need to have previous publishing experience. They should, however, have a strong interest in pursuing publishing as a career, and we strongly encourage undergraduates to use the program for college credit.

All applicants must be available to work for twenty hours a week.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Administrative support: data entry and organization, submission list research.
  • Assessing/answering queries.
  • Reading partial and full manuscripts for agents and writing readers reports.
  • Assistance with social media.
  • Performing special projects with or for the Literary Assistant.

Several members of the BookEnds team will review résumés and will be immediately drawn to candidates who write a compelling and personal cover letter, have a desire to advocate for authors, a passion for books, good communication skills, and a willingness to learn. More than anything, we’re looking for candidates who understand and want to be a part of BookEnds culture.

When sending a résumé, please include your cover letter in the body of the email and attach your résumé. Please include social media links on your résumé and the last three books you’ve read in your cover letter. Emails can be sent to info@bookendsliterary.com and can be addressed to the BookEnds Hiring Team.

All applicants will receive responses regarding the status of their application.
